In the United States a new study was conducted using artificial intelligence for innovative ways helping people with epilepsy. There were twelve volunteers who agreed become the subjects of this new procedure and underwent brain surgery.
Surgeons implanted hundreds of tiny electrodes in patients brains. Scientists studied their brains and tracked electrical signals in brains where the epileptic seizures took place. The researchers found that some of the signal deficiencies and interferences have occurred in the so-called inner capsule. In deed, this part of the brain is thought to be responsible for managing human mental capabilities. For example, this brain section helps us to move from one task to another.
AI is used to analyze brain data
Artificial intelligence helped to analyze the obtained data and to develop a plan for electrical stimulation in the brain. Researchers say that tiny, imperceptible electrical stimulations in human brain will help people regain control of their mental capabilities. It is important to emphasize that in this case, artificial intelligence was not used to enhance the functions of the human brain. AI (artificial intelligence) just helped to find the best ways to stimulate human brain using tiny small electrical impulses. Furthermore the study was conducted in order to stimulate human brain for healing purposes but not to make people smarter or make them gain supernatural empowerment.
Researchers say that this new method involving AI system may be soon introduced to treatments of many other brain deceases and is not being limited to epilepsy only. This computational system may help people with depression as well as AI itself are capable to identify brain areas where stimulation would help a person regaining healthy control.
Spotting signal deficiencies in brain
Generally speaking, artificial intelligence is a tool that allows you to diagnose signal deficiencies in human brain and selects the best stimulation points to correct brain dysfunctions. Researchers say it could be a whole new way to treat mental health disorders, including depression and anxiety.
In the past, brain electrostimulation has been successfully tested in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, movement disorders, brain injuries, psychiatric illnesses and other neurological illnesses. Above all, using artificial intelligence is the most exciting tool used in biomedicine and computational neuroscience.
